Delamination of compressed 'lms on curved substrates
نویسنده
چکیده
Delamination is considered for thin elastic 'lms that are bonded to cylindrical substrates and subject to an equi-biaxial compressive pre-stress. Results for both positive and negative curvatures are obtained. The 'lm buckles or de2ects (depending on the sign of the curvature) away from the substrate inducing mixed mode stress intensities at the edge of the delamination. The energy release rate and combination of modal stress intensities at the delamination edges are determined. Steady-state propagation of delamination blisters is analyzed for both axial and circumferential propagation directions. The results depend strongly on the substrate curvature. Circumferential propagation is suppressed when the curvature is negative, but is favored when the curvature is positive. Axial propagation can occur for both positive and negative curvature substrates. ? 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Buckling delamination in compressed multilayers on curved substrates with accompanying ridge cracks
Residually compressed films and coatings are susceptible to buckle delamination. The buckles often have linear or telephone cord morphology. When the films are brittle, such buckles are susceptible to the formation of ridge cracks that extend along their length, terminating close to the propagating front. The ridge-cracked buckles are invariably straight-sided (not telephone cord) and differ in...
متن کاملMode Dependent Toughness and the Delamination of Compressed Thin Films
We consider the buckle-driven delamination of compressed thin lms. For a wide class of patterns of delamination, it is shown that the loading on the delamination front progressively goes from mode I to mode II during growth of the blister. As a result, the mode dependence of the lm/substrate interface excludes widespread delamination. This explains the observations of blisters of nite extent, w...

متن کاملMode II Edge Delamination of Compressed Thin Films
Ceramic coatings deposited on metal substrates generally develop significant compressive stresses when cooled from the temperature at which they are processed as a result of thermal expansion mismatch. One of the main failure modes for these coatings is edge delamination. For an ideally brittle interface, the edge delamination of a compressed thin film involves mode II interface cracking. The c...
